Doc Rice

He is the renowned hi-tech junkie of the crew, with his fascination for technical details ranging from scratch techniques to equipment modifications.

His interest in DJing made its jump from mere spectator to hands-on while observing his friend perform a scratch on a old Sony turntable and a Radio Shack mixer. His first set of turntables (a pair of belt drive Scott-brands) were acquired in 1987. He helped form a mobile DJ crew (known at first as PHP, then later on as Groove Industry) in 1990 and soon became the head sound technician with his knowledge of audio electronics and theory. His high school years also saw him as the student manager of the school radio station where he had a daily morning broadcast.

In 1995, he started the epitome of websites dedicated to turntable music by creating Wicked Styles (www.wicked-styles.com) as a personal non-profit venture to extend knowledge of the turntable culture to the new generation. His comprehensive Turntablism 101 tutorial has proved to be the educating cornerstone in turntable production for a vast number of new generation DJs.

His first battle was the 1995 DMC West Coast (where he met Streak). His second was the 1996 All Import Nationals Battle where he met the rest of his crew-to-be. Since then he has battled alongside his crew in almost every battle until May 1997 whereafter he temporarily relocated to LA. Since then, he has refrained from stage performances. But even with his current hiatus, his battling days are not retired. His plan to move back to the Bay Area is now in progress.

In early 1998, he was offered a position to write a monthly column (entitled "Turntables") in Rap Pages Magazine, a mass-distributed national hip-hop publication, and was their main DJ-oriented contributor until the closing of the publication (ending with the December 1999 issue). As of May 2000, the publication has restarted and his interview with the legendary Grand Wizzard Theodore is printed in the first issue. He is also the main DJ and TechToys columnist for UrbanEarth.com and a contributor for Skratchcon.com.

Other dedicated interests include video games (time ever permitting), including space combat simulators (namely X-Wing Alliance, X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, etc.) and Mortal Kombat II at old arcades, learning new concepts at www.jackinworld.com, reading up on zbone.com, and attempts to be a regular at nudie bars along with his SR-I and Deja Vu conspirators. He is also a collector of Polaroids with pornostars and porn video memorabilia and merchandise from Jenna Jameson, Kia, Tia Belle, and Ashlyn Gere. You can occasionally find him online on TalkCity's IRC chat room #skratchdjs discussing various aspects of the strip club religion.

Doc Rice has just returned to the San Francisco Bay Area and is slowly working on his own break record as well as Sta's first EP album with Streak and Deus and is planning to return to the stage performing alongside his fellow Sta members.
